Directing light, particularly high-irradiance or near-infrared light, at or near the eye carries real risks, including thermal and photochemical retinal injury, if wavelength, power and exposure time are not properly controlled. Device certification by the Institute, where granted, speaks only to the specific device and protocol assessed and does not constitute a guarantee of safety or efficacy for any individual.
